The Sports Business Association at the University of Illinois is an undergraduate student organization providing members educational and networking opportunities within the wide world of sports. The mission of the SBA is to offer students at Illinois with an interest in pursuing a career in sports, with opportunities to expand their personal and professional competences within the sports industry through insightful guest speakers, workshops, and professional conferences.

Being founded in February 2013, this is the inaugural guest speaker event for the UIUC SBA. Keynote speakers for this event consist of a panel of three esteemed professionals within the University of Illinois athletic department. Tune in TONIGHT at 7 pm ET on new.livestream.com/sben/illinoissba

Jason Lener
Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director
Jason Lener was named executive senior associate athletics director in December 2011. Lener served as deputy athletic director at Miami University from 2006-11, where he led the athletic department senior management team and managed daily operations for the department. He also served as the sport administrator for football and men’s basketball, and was the principal liaison with Miami’s budget and finance office, general counsel’s office, human resources, information technology, the NCAA and the Mid-American Conference.  A native of Hermitage, Pa., Lener earned his bachelor’s degree from Westminster College (New Wilmington, Pa.) in 1993, where he was a three-year letterwinner as a quarterback in the Titan football program from 1990-92. He went on to earn his MBA from Robert Morris University in 1996 with an emphasis in sports administration while he was a graduate assistant with the football program.  Lener began his administrative career as assistant director of ticket operations at Pittsburgh in 1996 before being named director of ticket operations from 1997-99. In 1999, he was named the director of finance at Pittsburgh and he was promoted to assistant athletic director for business, finance and personnel. He accepted his current position at Miami in 2006.  Jason and his wife, Jodi, have three children, McKinley (11), Callan (9) and Cole (9).
Paul Kowalczyk
Senior Associate Athletic Director
Paul Kowalczyk (kuh-WALL-check) joined the Fighting Illini administrative staff as senior associate athletics director in August 2012.  Kowalczyk served as athletics director at Colorado State from 2006-2011 following his stint as AD at Southern Illinois from 2000-2006. During his time at SIU, the Salukis won 15 conference championships in seven sport programs.  He spent time at Northwestern as the business manager and associate athletic director/external affairs from 1991-2000 and was assistant athletic director for business operations at Kansas State from 1988-91. Kowalczyk also gained experience at Portland State as the athletic business manager from 1987 to 1988, at Youngstown State University in the marketing department and at Kent State in the development office.  A native of Warren, Ohio, Kowalczyk earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting at Kent State in 1980 and his master’s degree in sports administration at Kent State in 1986. He was named the Athletics Director of the Year, 1-AA Central Region, by NADCA in 2006 and received the General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award in 2004. He was the NCAA Leadership Council Representative for the Mountain West Conference from 2008-11 and served as the AD Chair for the Mountain West in 2011.  Kowalczyk is married to Peg Lynch Kowalczyk.
Holly Stalcup
Director of Event Management
Holly Stalcup was named the University of Illinois Director of Event Management in July of 2011. She is responsible for directing all aspects of game day operations for the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics as well as external events while also overseeing the scheduling of all Illinois’ Division of Intercollegiate Athletics facilities.  Stalcup began her career at the University of Illinois in August of 2003 as a graduate assistant in the Athletic Ticket Office. In July of 2004 she was hired as the Event Coordinator for the DIA and was promoted to Assistant Director of Event Management in 2010.  During her tenure at the University of Illinois, Stalcup has been very influential in the planning of numerous NCAA, Big Ten, IHSA and ITA Championships. Stalcup has also been involved in bowl preparations for Illinois Football.  A native of Springfield, Ill., Stalcup earned her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training in 2003 from the University of Illinois. During her four years as an undergraduate student she served as a student athletic trainer for the DIA. Stalcup also earned a master’s degree in Sports Management from the University of Illinois in 2005.

MSBC Website Launch Week in Review

On November 9th, 2012 the University of Michigan hosted their inaugural Sports Business Conference. Themed “The Changing Faces in Sport,” the conference comprised of a keynote panel discussion, a keynote address, and four panels

Gaining press recognition from ESPN & Forbes, the first MSBC was undoubtedly a success. Tickets sold out weeks prior to the event and made over 1,000 impressions on their Livestream channel.

Gearing up for the second annual conference, MSBC launched a brand new website this past Monday. On this website you will find everything you need to know about the conference. Every Monday night there will be a new guest blog post and every Thursday a Q&A session with an executive in the industry.

So what has MSBC done for the launch week of their new website?  They have:

  • 10% discounted tickets for the 2013 conference for answering Twitter questions about the website
  • MSBC March Madness Bracket Challenge through ESPN for iPad mini grand prize
  • Released eight news releases
  • Posted the first Monday-night guest blog
  • Posted the first Thursday-night Q&A session
  • Capping the week with a partnered career fair with three sets of speakers

Live From the Desk with Chris Chaney!

Tonight at 6:30 PM eastern we will have our second speaker for Live From the Desk! The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Chaney Sportainment Group (CSG), Chris Chaney will bring his vast knowledge to the table discussing the inception of the Ivy Sports Symposium and his entrepreneurial endeavors as well as answering any and all questions viewers have.

While at Princeton University, Chaney started the Ivy Sports Collaborative. He held the first Ivy Sports Symposium, then known as the Princeton Sports Symposium, in 2006 at Princeton University. Since 2006 the Symposium has expanded and has been held outside of Princeton at Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania. Chaney currently serves as an advisor to many initiatives and founded his own company CSG.

Chaney holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University and began his career in the Global Marketing Partnerships group at the NBA. Chris recently launched a mentoring and leadership program for overachieving college students passionate about the sports industry.

The achievements and leadership of Chaney have been widely recognized, including being named to the Forbes “30 Under 30” list. The list features today’s most impressive up-and-comers and tomorrow’s brightest stars. A proud German and American, Chaney is a passionate Ajax Amsterdam fan.
